Summary

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Paris Wife comes an atmospheric novel of intertwined destinies and heart-wrenching suspense: A detective hiding away from the world。 A series of disappearances that reach into her past。 Can solving them help her heal?

Anna Hart is a seasoned missing persons detective in San Francisco with far too much knowledge of the darkest side of human nature。 When tragedy strikes her personal life, Anna, desperate and numb, flees to the Northern California village of Mendocino to grieve。 She lived there as a child with her beloved foster parents, and now she believes it might be the only place left for her。 Yet the day she arrives, she learns that a local teenage girl has gone missing。

The crime feels frighteningly reminiscent of the most crucial time in Anna’s childhood, when the unsolved murder of a young girl touched Mendocino and changed the community forever。 As past and present collide, Anna realizes that she has been led to this moment。 The most difficult lessons of her life have given her insight into how victims come into contact with violent predators。 As Anna becomes obsessed with saving the missing girl, she must accept that true courage means getting out of her own way and learning to let others in。

Weaving together actual cases of missing persons, trauma theory, and a hint of the metaphysical, this propulsive and deeply affecting novel tells a story of fate, necessary redemption, and what it takes, when the worst happens, to reclaim our lives—and our faith in one another。

Pretty good mystery/thriller First of all I enjoyed this book。 There were some things that bothered me。 If the protagonist’s mom was an addict, she wouldn’t have left any money in the coffee can in the kitchen。 Second of all, when you make bread, you don’t put it in the oven after you knead it。 It has to rise first。 But other than those things, I enjoyed the story。

This is one of the best books that I have read in a very long time。 Anna Hart is a police detective who specializes in finding missing persons。 The book deals a lot with young girls who have gone missing and some who have turned out murdered。 Anna has gone back to her childhood town to seek some quiet in her life。 She’s dealing with lots of personal issues。 She finds her self in the middle of another case and cannot pull away。 I have read several of Paula McLain’s books。 She does an excellent jo This is one of the best books that I have read in a very long time。 Anna Hart is a police detective who specializes in finding missing persons。 The book deals a lot with young girls who have gone missing and some who have turned out murdered。 Anna has gone back to her childhood town to seek some quiet in her life。 She’s dealing with lots of personal issues。 She finds her self in the middle of another case and cannot pull away。 I have read several of Paula McLain’s books。 She does an excellent job of pulling you into the story。 The characters are alive and believable。 This book is intense so be prepared! 。。。more

Anna Hart has suffered a deep loss, setting her adrift in a sea of her own making。 Leaving her husband alone with his grief, she flees to Mendocino。 The small town is set idyllically on the ocean where she lived with the only foster family that actually cared for her。 Sadly, it was also the place that one of her friends disappeared from and was never found。Tragically, history has repeated itself。 This time, more than one young girl has gone missing。 Armed with a law enforcement badge as well as Anna Hart has suffered a deep loss, setting her adrift in a sea of her own making。 Leaving her husband alone with his grief, she flees to Mendocino。 The small town is set idyllically on the ocean where she lived with the only foster family that actually cared for her。 Sadly, it was also the place that one of her friends disappeared from and was never found。Tragically, history has repeated itself。 This time, more than one young girl has gone missing。 Armed with a law enforcement badge as well as her successful career saving children that have been abused Anna joins the local sheriff in the searches。 She must face her fears, as well as overcome her personal demons。 The underlying anguish of Anna is palpable。 Perhaps it is why she is determined to help the missing girls。 Maybe she will feel redemption if just one of them is not murdered。The characters come to life on the pages, along with the emotions the author artfully brings to the story。 Often fiction is based upon facts。 When the Stars Go Dark, while a work of fiction, weaves in the heartbreakingly true story of the kidnapping of Polly Klaas。 Be sure to read the Author’s Note at the end of the novel as she writes about it as well as touching on her journey in the foster care system and being a survivor of child abuse。 The setting is based on a town that exists。 The year is 1993, before cell phones, DNA and the internet became the norm。This is the first book I have read by Paula McLain。 She is a New York Times bestselling author of several novels as well as a memoir and two collections of poetry。 I am certain When the Stars Go Dark will become a bestseller as well。 I highly recommend it because the plot is page turning and the prose is often to be savored。 Put it on the top of your list of must reads。 If you are a fan of Jodi Picoult, you will love Paula McLain as they both have the same depth and powerful emotion threaded throughout their novels。DISCLOSURE OF MATERIAL CONNECTION: I have a material connection because I received a review copy for free from Netgalley in exchange for a fair and honest review。 Copyright © 2021 Laura Hartman 。。。more

Is it possible for that career choice to become an obsession? Although she chose to leave her fractured family to help others, she eventually must face her demons。 Does that self-enforced space really help? There were a few too many missing abused children for me。 I especially didn’t like real life Polly Klaas being added to the mix。 There were also a few unnecessary cliches。 But I’ll end with a quote that I found meaningful: “What is all the suffering if not to see how alike we are, and not alone。 Where will the mercy come from if not from us?” 。。。more

The Year is 1993: The Place is Mendocino, California。A Detective with a troubled past returns to the place she once called home: Mendocino and the place where Cameron, a local teenage girl has been abducted。 Detective Anna Hart is a missing person detective in San Francisco。 Now she’s in the right place at the right time and can assist Will, the Sheriff of Mendocino, who also happens to be an old friend, in the search for the missing girl。 Cameron is not the first, nor will she be the last girl to be taken from the surrounding area。 The story opens with the abduction of Polly Klaas which took center stage in real life and in “When the Stars Go Dark。” Somehow, Paula McClain was able to weave fact and fiction together both beautifully and tragically。 As the investigation continues, tensions mount, and hearts break。 Here, the timeline flips back and forth between past and present。 That is, Anna Hart’s past and present, as Anna’s past has a lot to do with her current line of work and the demons she faces every day。 The time period this novel takes place in has a major impact on the way this story is told as well as the outcome of it。 Brilliantly plotted, taut, and extremely suspenseful, this slow-burn mystery suspense was both hard to listen to and hard to put down。The worst part for me in listening to this was simply knowing that children are abducted and assaulted every day。 I listened to the audiobook version of this which was narrated by the stupendous Marin Ireland。 If you are looking for an extremely important and relevant mystery/suspense to read and enjoy, I highly recommend “When Stars Go Dark” by Paula McLain。Thank you to my local library for loaning me a copy。Published on Goodreads, Twitter, and Instagram。 。。。more
